Having noticed that many students entering University do not know how to write, James Webster developed this writing course on structure and style in writing composition. For those of you who heard Andrew Pudewa last year at TPA, this is the course he teaches. It is for both the reluctant and avid writer. We have used many different writing curriculums and feel that this one is far above any others. It can be used on every level from first through twelfth grade, building skills every year on more and more difficult reading levels.
Many times students have a difficult time with writing assignments because they do not know what to write about. In this course the students write using models from other writers. This is the method Benjamin Franklin used to become a great writer! Students start by making key word outlines of sentences and progress slowly to essay and critique writing. Some other units include: Note Making and Outlines, Summarizing from Notes, Summarizing Narrative Stories, Summarizing a Reference, Writing from Pictures, Library Research Reports, and Creative Writing.
In class I plan to use a video of Andrew Pudewa teaching other students. He teaches the new skill, gives many examples, works together with the students’ ideas, and gives inspiration for the students to do their best. We will do some writing in class and also sharing of our compositions. The students will be expected to work outside of class doing assignments two or three times during the week.
I will use a checklist-based grading approach. This means that if the student includes all the listed “dress-up” requirements in the paragraphs, he will receive an A. If he does not, he will be given an “Incomplete” and be given the paper back for a second chance. We will practice each of these skills in class first so that everyone has experience with the skill before leaving class.
Prior to our fall class there will be a meeting with all the mothers of the enrolled students. The purpose of the meeting is to familiarize you with this program so you can better help your son or daughter at home. We will set this date and time after enrollment.
