Home Economics

Description: This class is for children with little or no sewing experience.

Each student will bring her own sewing machine and should

learn over the summer how to set it up and thread it. The first

project will probably be a pillowcase.

Middle School Literature

Description: Students will read selected books and meet to discuss what

they’ve read. Activities which complement the books may

be included. Students will be expected to read at home and

come prepared for class. No grade will be given.

Ann Newcomer will hold a meeting on Monday, July 31st for students and parents in her math classes (Accounting, Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry) to discuss book needs and decide additional meeting days. Algebra I and Geometry will each meet twice a week, and Algebra II will meet three times a week. The planning meeting will be held at Oakdale Park at 7:30 pm in the shelter near the playground.

Ann will require homework in her three math classes and will give grades. Ann’s phone number is 825-4910.

Accounting

Description: Learn the basics in this business class. Homework will be

required, and students will receive a grade.

Age: Algebra I is a prerequisite, but geometry can also be taken after

Algebra II.

Class Fee: Families must obtain the book, and if enough used copies cannot

be obtained, the new edition of this text costs about $60.00.

Laura Von Bergen (823-2813) will teach the following history classes. Both classes meet all year. Laura bases the courses on the Tapestry of Grace curriculum which covers world and American history in four years. History 1 is ancient history. History 4 is the 1900’s. Homework will be required, and grades will be given. Both courses also include some geography, church history, and government. Students need to be able to read at a high school level and take class notes. Textbooks are the skeleton of the course, but other foundational books will be needed as well. A list will be available at registration.

Spanish II

Description: This is a high-school level course which will require home-

work. Students will receive a grade. Students should have

taken Spanish I, but Chrissy would perhaps consider new

students who have the prerequisite knowledge.

Physical Science Lab

Description: This will meet the lab requirement for a physical science class.

Age: taking physical science, 8th – 12th grade

Class Fee: The lab book is $15.00 / student. Supplies are $30.00 / student.

Curriculum: Debbie will be working from Abeka Physical Science.

Length: all year, most weeks, sometimes meeting at Metzger’s home

Chemistry

Description: This is a high school level class which Beth has taught before.

In addition to meeting on Thursdays, she also plans to offer

Friendly Chemistry on another afternoon during the fall

semester to practice chemistry concepts using games and

activities. Beth will coordinate a lab in

the spring with KWU. Families may pick and choose what

parts of this course they wish to do.

cost $5.00 / student / semester for copies. Friendly Chemistry

will cost $2.00 / student / semester for copies. The cost for the

Biology Lab

Description: This will meet the lab requirement for a high school biology

class.

involving the students.

Nutrition and Fitness

Description: This is a high school elective which families may use for ˝

credit. Students will learn about nutrition and healthy habits to

care for their bodies. Relevant topics such as vegetarianism, exercise, and nutrient supplements will be discussed. Tests will be given. There will be outside homework, and grades will be given.

Writing

Description: This class will use Institute For Excellence In Writing

materials developed by Andrew Pudewa, including use of a

video by Mr. Pudewa. Outside writing will

be part of this class, and grades will be given. The class will be

different than any other writing curriculum, and a more detailed

U.S. Geography

Description: This class will focus on regions of the United States and their

distinctive characteristics. Children will become familiar with

the states and also gain skills in reading and understanding

maps.

Age: 6 and 7 year olds

Class Fee: Gayle may use a book in which case parents will reimburse her,

but the cost will be minimal, probably under $5.00.

Science A and Science B will both be taught by Nikole Bird (823-7390). She will be working from The Backyard Scientist, but it is not necessary for parents to buy this book. Nikole will be leading the students in performing fun, hands-on experiments to reinforce science concepts. The only difference between the two science classes is the age groupings.

PE A – At this time, this class for 6 and 7 year olds needs a teacher or

teachers.

 

 

Karla Hoover (827-5008) will teach the following two PE classes again this year. The Presidential Fitness Challenge will provide the framework for the classes which will emphasize personal fitness, strength, and endurance. Good sportsmanship and Christian character will also be incorporated. The only difference between the classes is the age groupings.

PE B

Melissa Miller (827-7442) will teach art classes all three hours on Thursday mornings. The classes will last all year, but first semester will focus on paint, and second semester will focus on multi-media. The only difference between the three classes is the age groupings.
